You might have following questions

Q: My experiences are not exciting and interesting enough. Can I shoot other people’s stories?

A: Not only are the so-called "exciting" and "interesting" stories worthy of appearing on the screen; your stories are as well. In fact, this misunderstanding has led to the stereotyping and symbolization of LGBTQ+ films to a certain extent. Through this project, we hope to help our community build confidence, improve capacity, and then use practice to enrich existing on-screen LGBTQ+ images.

Q: What is the film public showcase in London and Nottingham in June 2024?

A: Through three months of learning and practice, each participant will be able to create their own short film. We will celebrate the creative outputs through the public screenings. The screening events are scheduled to take place during the Pride Month in June 2024, which is also a perfect time to increase the visibility of Chinese queer community through film. We anticipate two screenings, one in London and one in Nottingham, both free of charge to the audience. But other screening opportunities are possible.

Q: Can the dates of workshops be flexible? What if some of the dates I can't make it?

*All the films produced through the project will be listed under a Creative Commons license, available on the project website and with the creators’ names credited. We expect that you share your completed film with us, according to Creative Commons Public Licence (CC BY 4.0), on the project website, in post-workshop screening events and for project publicity.

*We expect that you agree to be interviewed by the project team, and the workshops to be documented in photographs and videos for the use of project publicity and the project reports.

The project is supported by the University of Nottingham. In collaboration with Queer China UK, it hopes to connect academic research to society and empower minority communities.

The Missing Dialogues

dir.Ming | 26mins08s |

What does it mean to be shaped by political identity while growing up? As a Taiwanese growing up in China Mainland, such questions from others have been an inescapable tide for Ming. How does being queer intertwine with these layers? "The Missing Dialogues" is a documentary that delves into these intersections through the director's exploration of her Taiwanese roots, exposing the hidden vulnerabilities. By connecting with others and unearthing the silenced conversations between Taiwanese and Chinese perspectives, the film tenderly reveals new ways of perceiving identity and belonging.

《间》THE LEAVED, THE LEFT

The Leaved, The Left is a poetic and introspective short film that explores the intertwining themes of self-identity, intimate relationships, and the sense of belonging. Through the journey of a constantly moving train and shifting scenes, akin to consciousness or dreams, the film captures the protagonist's quest to find the balance between presence and absence, connection and solitude, imagination and reality. Just as a train has its starting point and destination, the film's use of black-and-white imagery symbolizes the protagonist's struggle within a binary world.

T是什么?T is for?

dir.Haoye | 8mins45s |

The film is part of the queer across wave film project, a joint project between the University of Nottingham and queerchinauk. The short film is a love story, but more of a personal story adapted from a personal story by the director, HAOYE好野.

A lesbian (T) from an East Asian queer culture meets a girl in a supermarket who she falls in love with at first sight. In the process of trying to get closer to the girl, she overhears the girl on the phone describing her ideal type, which leads to T's psychological changes and doubts about her gender identity.

The director of this film also grew up in the queer culture of East Asia. In the process of growing up, she has been caught in the dilemma of choosing between sexual orientation and gender identity. "Is it so easy for everyone to make a choice? Do girls always like dessert, and do boys always like meat? What about me? How do I choose?"

"Are people making choices, or are choices choosing people? "

So Darling, Play Your Violin

dir.Yuwei | 17mins23s |

Screenshot 2024-06-24 at 00.56.23.png

“So Darling, Play Your Violin” is an essay film and also director Yuwei’s first film. It tells a story of a tree/ human: they wander through the human world, not knowing what love is and having forgotten who they are. As they retrieve lost love and self, they question.

This short film is inspired by the Chinese classic philosophical concept "Zhuangzi's Butterfly Dream", applying this concept to explain, deconstruct, and dissolve gender, combining anti-anthropocentrism with degendering. However, amid the blurred lines between reality and illusion, real-world gender issues become more apparent - not only referring to an individual's gender identity & queer identity but also to gender inequality, a socio-cultural issue, under the East Asian patriarchy deeply influenced by Confucianism. As stated at the beginning of the film, “This is a fairy tale, or maybe not."

"I feel like living, for me, is constantly convincing myself to play 'this role.'" - a line from the character Little Tree in the film reflects a confusion that has troubled the director, Yuwei, since childhood. Perhaps beyond the confines of the physical body and material world, the soul is like a dream, like a bubble, like dew, like lightning, is just a fragment of gentleness without self.

WHO IS OUT?

unnamed.jpg

The film mainly portrays an imagined scenario in which a female queer try to come out to her family, emphasizing the parents' disregard and avoidance of their daughter's identity, alongside the protagonist's internal struggle to resist and erupt in the coming-out moment. These elements are juxtaposed using a surrealistic approach. It depicts modern queer women want to shed family bondage while yearning for familial understanding. Employing humor and ironic "coming-out weapons" as fictional cues, the film illustrates an assertive display of feminine and queer power.
